BUFFALO, NY – December 9, 2022 – A new research article has been published in Genes and Cancer on November 23, 2022, entitled “Ectopic expression of MHIV lncRNA as a potential diagnostic biomarker in cervical cancer.”

Cervical cancer (CC) is one of the most common cancers in women. Recent advances in human papillomavirus (HPV) screening and vaccination have increased protection against CC. However, there is no effective diagnostic biomarker and therapeutic approach during disease progression.

In this new study, researchers Mohammad Ghanbari, Aida Aghazadeh, Elaheh Malekabbaslou, Ali Rajabi, Aref Sobhkhizy, Melika Maydanchi, Ali Saber, and Reza Safaralizadeh from Tabriz University and Zimagene Medical Genetics Laboratory aimed to assess changes in ncRNA expression associated with microvascular invasion in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCI ncRNA) and its diagnostic value as a biomarker in DC patients.

“This research aims to assess the expression levels of MVIH in CC tumors in order to assess the potential of this lncRNA as a diagnostic biomarker in CC patients.”

One hundred and fifteen (n=115) pairs of primary CC tumor and non-tumor marginal tissue specimens were obtained from Tabriz Valiasr International Hospital (Tabriz, Iran). RNA extraction and cDNA synthesis followed by quantitative reverse transcriptase PCR (qRT-PCR) have been considered to study alterations in MHIV expression levels in CC patients. Associations between changes in MHIV expression and clinicopathologic features as well as its potential as a diagnostic biomarker were assessed using SPSS and GraphPad Prism and Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) software.

MHIV expression levels were significantly higher in CC tumors compared to non-tumor marginal samples (p < 0.0001). MVIH overexpression was significantly associated with younger age (p=0.033), lymph node metastasis (p=0.031), depth of tumor invasion (p=0.035), and CC squamous cell type ( p = 0.019). ROC analysis of MHIV as a diagnostic biomarker revealed the respective sensitivity and specificity of 67.83 and 80.

“The overexpression of MVIH in CC tumors suggests its oncogenic role during tumorigenesis. Thus, it can serve as a potential diagnostic biomarker.
