The Dungeness crab fishing season was delayed on the Central Coast for the second time in 2022. On Monday, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife delayed commercial fishing for Dungeness crabs until at least Dec. 16. In its decision, the department cited whale entanglements in fishing gear as the reason for the delay. According to Oceana, a nonprofit ocean conservation group, there were 15 confirmed whale entanglements in 2022. They cited statistics from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
